Hydro 101: Controlling Medium Evaporation
| Controlling Medium Evaporation |
Studies have shown the the surface layer of fertilizers of can be 3 to 6 times higher than in the rest of the media. This is due to the evaporation rate of water from the medium. Simply by creating a barrier or a cover on the medium will slow down and control water and fertilizer used. Therefore, increasing uniformity and efficiency of water going to different container sites, reducing the amount of water and fertilizer from 20 to up to 50%. This makes for better management of fertilizers, keeping fertilizer or nutrients in the root zone instead of moving up to the surface. This reduces the overall fertilizer salts that are needed. The covers can be made at of black and white plastic white side up, or by using some rock. The medium will still need to breathe, all were trying to do is slow down the evaporation rate. We will also cut down on algae growth. |
